The RESIT Formula: A Practical Framework for Answer Engine Optimization
Relevance, Evidence, Structure, Identity, Trust. Five measurable signals that determine whether AI answer engines retrieve, synthesize, and cite your content — or discard it. RESIT is a scoring framework for AEO readiness.
Traditional SEO was built around visibility — rankings, keywords, backlinks, traffic. Answer engines change the optimization target entirely. The real question is no longer “Will this page rank?” It is “Would an AI system trust this page enough to synthesize it into an answer?” Most websites are not built for that. They are built to attract clicks, not to survive extraction. RESIT is the framework for closing that gap.
1. What is RESIT?
RESIT is a five-factor framework for evaluating whether a piece of content is structurally prepared for AI retrieval, synthesis, citation, and answer generation. It is named for its five components:
- R — Relevance. Does the page directly answer a known query with minimal ambiguity?
- E — Evidence. Are claims supported with proof a model can verify and reuse?
- S — Structure. Can a retriever cleanly extract a self-contained answer from the document?
- I — Identity. Is the author, organization, and topic affiliation legible to an entity graph?
- T — Trust. Does the page exhibit the freshness, transparency, and integrity signals that answer engines avoid downgrading?
The framework is designed around how modern answer engines actually process information: LLM retrieval, semantic chunking, entity resolution, citation selection, confidence scoring, and synthesis safety. RESIT is operational answer-engine behavior translated into measurable content signals.
2. Why traditional SEO is breaking
Classical SEO rewarded keyword density, backlink acquisition, page authority, and metadata optimization. Answer engines do not behave like a SERP. They summarize, compare, synthesize, compress, cite selectively, and discard weak sources entirely.
Modern retrieval and synthesis systems increasingly optimize for confidence, extractability, factual consistency, machine readability, and source reliability. That changes what optimization means.

3. R — Relevance
Relevance means the page directly answers a known query with minimal ambiguity. Most websites fail here immediately, because they publish vague positioning pages, abstract thought leadership, brand-heavy copy, and generalized marketing language. AI systems prefer specificity.

Modern retrievers reward precision because precision lowers synthesis risk. Relevance is not keyword stuffing; it is query alignment. The closer a page maps to a known user question, the cheaper it is for an answer engine to choose it over a competing source.
4. E — Evidence
Evidence is the largest separator between AI-visible content and ignored content. Most online content makes claims; very little proves them. Answer engines increasingly favor examples, references, benchmarks, methodology, original research, screenshots, reproducible findings, comparisons, and operational detail. Evidence transforms content from opinion into reusable source material.
Evidence that reliably lifts citation probability includes:
- Internal data and customer aggregates
- Process documentation and technical breakdowns
- Experiments and reproducible methodology
- Citations to primary sources, not aggregators
- Screenshots and real workflows
- Failure analysis and implementation detail
The more reproducible the insight, the more reusable the page becomes. Evidence is also the factor most strongly associated with synthesis safety: an answer engine that cannot independently verify a claim will prefer a source that gives it a defensible single sentence.
5. S — Structure
Structure determines whether information can be extracted cleanly. A well-written article with poor structure often performs worse in AEO than a simpler article with cleaner organization, because answer engines chunk information rather than reading whole pages.
Retrievers parse, in order of usefulness:
- Descriptive H1/H2/H3 headings
- Direct-answer paragraphs in the first sentence of a section
- Lists, tables, and FAQ blocks
- Schema markup (Article, FAQPage, Product, Organization)
- Concise definitions and consistent terminology
Dense walls of text create ambiguity at chunk boundaries. Structured content improves retrieval accuracy, semantic mapping, summarization, and citation selection. A structure-first approach reduces token confusion during retrieval.
6. I — Identity
Identity is one of the most overlooked components in AEO. Answer engines increasingly rely on entity understanding to determine who created the content, what organization is associated, what industry it belongs to, which products are referenced, and whether expertise is consistent across the domain. Identity is how an engine establishes contextual trust before it ever reads the body.

Over time, answer engines build probabilistic confidence around entities. The clearer the entity graph — and the more consistently the page reinforces it — the easier the content becomes to trust and reuse for adjacent queries on the same entity.
7. T — Trust
Trust is the final filter. Even relevant, evidence-backed, structured content can fail if trust signals are weak. Trust is a composite of freshness, consistency, transparency, accuracy, security, source quality, and editorial integrity.
AI systems increasingly avoid:
- Exaggerated or unverifiable claims
- Manipulative formatting and spam patterns
- Synthetic filler content
- Stale pages with no maintained timestamp
And reliably reward:
- Updated last-modified dates
- Citations to primary sources
- Methodology disclosures
- Author biographies and contact information
- Privacy policies and security signals
- Transparent statements of limitations
8. The RESIT scoring model
A practical implementation scores each component on a 0-to-its-weight scale and sums to a 100-point composite. The weights reflect how each factor contributes to citation survivability across the retrieval, extraction, and synthesis pipeline.

Not all pages need a perfect 100. But persistent weakness in Evidence or Trust usually prevents long-term citation survivability, regardless of how strong the other factors are. Evidence carries the highest weight because synthesis-safety filters apply to every claim a model considers reusing; a single unverifiable assertion in an otherwise strong page can suppress the whole.
Suggested optimization order
- Fix Structure first. It is the cheapest to repair and unlocks the value of Evidence and Relevance work that may already exist on the page.
- Lift Evidence next. Replace assertions with cited claims; add original data; cite primary sources, not aggregators.
- Sharpen Relevance. Map every page to one query intent. Remove generic positioning copy.
- Build Identity over time. Schema, sameAs links, named authors, and consistent terminology compound over months, not weeks.
- Maintain Trust as a cadence. Freshness, methodology disclosures, and limitations notes are ongoing work, not one-time edits.
9. The real shift: SEO vs. AEO
SEO optimized for discovery. AEO optimizes for reuse. That is the actual transition happening right now. The winning pages are increasingly quotable, extractable, evidence-backed, entity-linked, structurally clean, and operationally useful. The internet is shifting from “Can this rank?” to “Can this safely become part of an AI-generated answer?” — a fundamentally different optimization problem.
10. Limitations
RESIT is a practitioner framework, not a closed-form model. The five components are not fully orthogonal: high Identity tends to correlate with high Trust, and Structure interacts with Evidence whenever a citation is formatted as a chunk. The default weights here are operator-calibrated rather than regression-fit on a public dataset; different industries and engines may warrant different weightings. RESIT pairs cleanly with the Citation Survivability Index (CSI), which models the same survival problem at the chunk level with explicit retrieval-pipeline variables.
11. Conclusion
The optimization target has changed. Search engines ranked pages; answer engines decide what to reuse. RESIT is a framework for evaluating whether content is structurally prepared for that reuse — clearer answers, stronger proof, cleaner structure, sharper entity identity, and higher trust. That is what answer engines increasingly reward, and that is what RESIT was designed to measure.
